Dark unicorn

For a while now I’ve wanted to step away from the classic theme of the white unicorn, with its purity and rainbows and give it a bit of attitude. I thought that this was quite an obvious thought process for someone creative with a dark edge and unicorns seem to be everywhere at the moment so I was surprised by the lack of relevant images online when I decided to do some research.

This was ultimately good news as it meant there wasn’t much I had to tick off the list due to someone else having done it before. I still wanted it to be quite an abstract interpretation of the unicorn as opposed to a full on pony costume with a horn and as always I couldn’t decide on just one way to style it so I portrayed it in 3 facets. Pretty unicorn, warrior unicorn and queen unicorn.

I thought these were all likely characters for the dark unicorn to take on and Jamie Mahon did a great job bringing them to life and create the right atmosphere. I also borrowed some beautiful taxidermy accessories from Sophie Adamson to complete the looks. The wardrobe/styling was provided by Eustratia and the chainmail by Richard Ayres, as usual.

We also took the opportunity to shoot some other bits on the same day but I’ve decided to include them in a different post.

I wore a revised version of this outfit to Torture garden for Halloween and added ears to the headband which I thought looked much better.

For those of you who are unicorn fans, the selection of unicorn themed items on my site is growing! Grad yourself something at http://www.eustratia.co.uk

Dark unicorn inspiration

Those of you who have been following my blog for while will have seen the unicorn inspiration board that I posted last year. I’ve been wanting to do a dark unicorn shoot for a while now and have finally managed to arrange it with photographer Jamie Mahon, who’s dark aesthetic should fit the theme perfectly.

I gathered my initial inspiration on a board and I’m excited to see how the ideas evolve from there.

My wardrobe for the shoot is being provided by Eustratia and Richard Ayres and I’m also using some accessories by Sophie Adamson.

Artist spotlight: Lost Fish

I’ve been thinking about getting some t-shirts printed for Eustratia and have subsequently been working on my illustration again after a long break. I don’t have any finished pieces to share yet but I thought I’d feature some of my inspiration. I got the dark inspiration book for my birthday a couple of months ago. It features a plethora of interesting artists, many of which are worth featuring but the one that appealed to me the most has got to be Lost Fish.

LostFish (Elodie is her real name), was born in 1983 in the south of France.

Self-taught, she began her creative development as a freelance character designer, but quickly turns to an artistic universe, creating digital paintings.

Her influences are mostly classical, inspired by the Flemish painters and the art of the 19th century, both in painting and photography, she draws mostly strange and sometimes disturbing girls, half woman and half child.

A selection of my favourite pieces from various sets:

I love the doll-like features, period clothing and surrealist elements as well as the way the hair as been drawn. I also find the colour schemes very pleasing.

Inspirational photography 1

I’ve been wanting to start a new feature that focuses on photography that inspires me for a while and I wasn’t sure if it should focus on editorials or photographers. I first decided to go for editorials so I could feature my favourite photographers more than once but then realised that some of them don’t actually shoot editorials so it will, in some cases, just be collections of images that appeal to me and fit together in some way.

Tim Walker is probably my favourite photographer of all time, so I decided to start the feature with his recent editorial for issue 7 of LOVE magazine, out last month. The editorial is entitled “the origin of monsters” and features Kristen McMenamy shot with giant insect-related props and wearing armour (two themes that I have been working with recently), exquisitely styled by Katie Grand.

Shopping style boards

It has been a while since I last had time for a shopping post. I always save images of products I find interesting but at busy times I have to focus on orders. While I’m disappointed I didn’t get to post about some of my finds, however, I think this is a great time for a clothes post as everyone has updated their ranges for spring.

I have complied 3 boards of my favorite spring styles.

Auxiliary calender images

In October last year I shot a couple of looks for a submission to Auxiliary magazine’s 2012 calender. I posted some details regarding the inspiration here.

In the end there weren’t able to produce the whole calender so they chose a few of the best images (6) to make into phone and desktop backgrounds, they are all stunning and can be viewed/downloaded on their site, here.

Amongst the selections was my image, by Jennifer Byron photography. I’m glad they picked this one as it was probably my favourite from this set.

My favourite from the other set we shot that day is the one below, the rest can be seen on my facebook page, Biomechanina.

Deer Series

Hope everyone had a good Christmas and is looking forward to the new year (hopefully with some exciting parties)!

We recently shot the last part of my accessories project with Jennifer Byron photography and the outcome of one of the sets were these (quite festive) deer characters.

All the accessory shoot sets were planned out at the same time (September) so it was quite a lucky coincidence that the deer ones happened to fall in december. This gave me an excuse to include some of the new winter accessories that weren’t originally going to be part of the shoot.

Cold deer

I had this glitter tears idea ages ago and tried it for a different shoot but it didn’t really work so I’m glad it came out well in these.

Blood deer

I actually used a glitter glue pen for the tears on this one, it was the best looking red glitter I could find but was quite stingy so I wouldn’t recommend wearing it for too long.

Dark deer

I have a few dark images that are kind of similar so I tried to pic something different for this one with a softer and more animated pose.

Notice the Aesthetic contradiction logo necklace? I’m planning a little giveaway for these soon. All other accessories (excluding the body jewellery :p) can be purchased at http://www.eustratia.co.uk!

Antlers are made to order, please email enquiries@eustratia.co.uk for details.

Best wishes for the new year,

Bella Morte Alt girls feature

This month I was selected to feature in Bella Morte magazine’s Alt girls issue, available to purchase here. They chose a set of photos I shot a while ago, in Chester with Gareth Hickey. There were a few hundred entries and only 20 girls were featured which makes me feel quite good.

They chose a set of photos I shot a while ago, in Chester with Gareth Hickey and gave me a double page spread, which you can view below.

My favourite image from this set and the one I use for my book is the one below but the feature has definitely make me appreciate the other two a lot more.

Dark inspirations

With Halloween coming up and having to research for various shoots and costumes (including my own which I will write about separately), I have been drawn towards darker influences.

When I started preparing for my first shoot, a calender and possible magazine submission with Jennifer Byron photography (http://jenniferbyron.com/) I had absolutely no idea what look I was going for. I knew that it had to be dark/passable as a Halloween theme and also utilise these glittery skulls I had (photographers request) in a different way to last year.

So, I started looking online for inspiration and here’s what I liked:

Make up inspired by Alex Box.

Vogue Paris Halloween

Inner Demons Photographed by Jerry Bennet :: Modeled & MUA by Manchester Wardrobe and Styled by Alex London Source: http://hautemacabre.com/

I didn’t use all of these influences literally as I always like to create my own looks and items I feel strongly about at the moment but finding inspirational images helps me get a feel for the look I’m trying to create and imagine the possibilities.

I did however try out the make up, I’ve always had a love of organic vein/root patterns and black line drawings so I felt like it needed to be part of the character I was creating.

make up trial (please excuse terrible photobooth pics, it did look better in real life)

I didn’t do this hairstyle for the actual shoot and the dress was covered in so many chains and accessories you wouldn’t recognise it. Images from this shoot hopefully to follow shortly.

At the moment I’m planning a shoot for the Eustratia (www.eustratia.co.uk) feature in Alternative magazine with Toria Brigtside (http://www.modelmayhem.com/1592461).

They have requested we showcase as many different styles as possible so I have decided to give each of the four models a character based on stereotypical types of alt girls/goths. Though the outfits will be quite different, the colour scheme and styling will hopefully tie everything together to produce a concise collection of images.

We will have a very limited time to get ready for this shoot so I thought it would be better to use wigs for at least two of the models, preferably black wigs.

Inspiration:

Big black hair

While looking for general inspiration I came across two sets of images that I liked which both featured these very high, black, messy up dos. I thought something like this would go perfectly with two of my looks while also being one of these features that ties the whole thing together so I customised a couple of black wigs I had in my collection.

wigs

It isn’t really evident from the pictures but they actually have quite a lot of texture going on. For the first one I actually used my black hair swan and wire scupture which was previously an alien helmet hair ball. I like recycling stuff I’ve used in previous shoots. You can view what is has been used as previously here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=208808015853005&set=a.115201681880306.11512.115197565214051&type=3&theater

More inspiration:

Harpers Bazaar

I was thinking of using a little veil like this on a couple of the models.

Schmuck mag.

And even perhaps using my wire-mesh eyepatch.

To finish off, here are some bad pictures of my quick outfit sketches, hopefully the silhouettes are still visible.

Models left to right: Helen, Amber, Stacey, Victoria

I’m looking forward to this shoot but still have quite a lot of work to do finalising everything.
